I wanted to experiment doing a portrait using Watercolour Pencils.  I used a reference photo from p29 'Hair' Magazine Sept 2016.   I reverse image searched it and you can find it as the 8th picture at the link below:

I've been too scared to draw many portraits in the past, but for this one I used a light box and traced her face using a rainbow of colours with watercolour pencils.  I'm not confident enough to draw free hand yet.  But as my first experiment of a portrait using this technique with watercolour pencils, I'm happy with the result!

I loved the movie 'Dirty Dancing' as a kid, and I wanted to draw the iconic end dance scene in my line drawing style.  Fun!

I love signing off correspondence with 'with love'.  I wanted to use typography to draw a symbol with this greeting, so I drew the words 'with love' forming a love heart, with a little love heart between the two words.  Fun!

With love to the world this Valentine's Day.

I Dig You

Years ago, I saw a valentine's card that I thought was hilarious.  It said 'I Like You' and had a picture of a dog sniffing another dog's butt.  How romantic!

Last year I wanted to draw my own version, so I came up with the pun 'I dig you' (which is slang for 'I like you') and drew an illustration of a boy dachshund getting so excited sniffing a girl dachshund's butt, that he digs his feet.

Randomly, after I drafted my picture, on Facebook a friend posted a cartoon by the artist Gemma Correll.  I LOVE her work!  She draws hilarious cartoons, puns and a variety of things.   Pugs and cartoons on mental health are her specialty and I think she's just brilliant.  I wanted to support her work so I ordered some books by her - including 'The Worrier's Guide to Life,' 'It's a Punderful Life,' and 'The Little Book of Pug Wisdom.'  She also had 'Doodling For Dog People.' What an awesome discovery.

And...while I was browsing her artwork, I came across the original 'I Like You' card!  You can buy it here:  'I Like You' by Gemma Correll - by Ohh Deer gifts

I went to bed listening to David Bowie, and thinking about doing an artwork in dedication to him.  At 2 am I woke with this idea - 'David Bow(t)ie' - still revolutionising men's fashion!

I drew the iconic image of David Bowie from the album 'Aladdin Sane' and made it into a bowtie.

8x10" Watercolour using Jane Davenport Bright Palette

I recently discovered art by James Luke Burke Creative which introduced me to the Jane Davenport art supply range.  Her watercolours are amazing, and I was drawn to her 'Bright Palette' - with 12 vibrant, bright colours.

This was my first artwork experimenting with them.  I love the colours.  I drew the girl from a photo of a red dress by Armani, and copied the model's pose but changed the colours.  I used a range of colours from purple, pinks, blues, greens and yellow.  The Jane Davenport colours I used are named 'Royal,' 'Fairytale', 'Best Friend', 'Butterfly', '70's Eyeshadow,' 'Mermaid,' 'Jimminy,' and 'Buzzy.'

I love how the colours dried with patterns in the watercolour wash.  I was very happy with the result and am excited to have new bright watercolours to play with - it's exactly what I have wanted for a very long time!
