Final Drawing for 2016

8x10" Extra Fine Sharpie Markers on Paper

2016 has been a defining year for me.  It has been tough, challenging, but in the end creative and fulfilling.  The word that I feel as I go into 2017 is HOPE.

A friend gave me some coloured sharpie markers for Christmas - ooooh love!  So here is my first go to try them out.  I was looking at Typography (making art from words) and Zentangle techniques and came up with my own doodles of flowers, animals and nature.

It makes me think of a wise phrase a wonderful friend who is chronically ill said to me: 'Where there is life there is Hope'

If you look hard, you will find these signs of life:
- A 4 leaf clover
- Flowers
- Leaves
- Grass
- A grasshopper
- Ferns
- A chameleon
- A dandelion
- A daisy
- A dragonfly
- A rose
- A caterpillar
- A coccoon
- A butterfly
- A ladybug
- A birdie
- A bumblebee

May your life be filled with HOPE

Tropical Toucan

8x10" White Oil Pastel and Watercolour on paper

I love the colours of a toucan!  This image brings me much joy.  You can buy prints and products from this and many other artworks on Redbubble here

Update:  a friend asked how I made 'Tropical Toucan'.  Here's a guide:

1) First I drew the outline in pencil, then traced it with white oil pastel, using a light box to make it easier.  The light box also gave enough light to be able to see where the white oil pastel was on the white paper.

2) Then using bright watercolours, (I use the watercolour blocks, you can use tubes too) I filled in the colour.  I used watercolour brush pens - I find them easier to control and use than ordinary brushes.

I find watercolour is a great medium as you don't have to press hard like pencils.  And you are forced to 'pace' - I would sit up long enough to do one colour at a time, then lie down between colours, as if you do two colours at a time that are next to each other, they tend to run.  So it takes some time and patience, but is less strenuous than sitting up and doing too much all at once.

PEACE Dove

A4 Pitt Pen on Watercolour Paper

Yesterday I was looking through Pinterest and found an amazing drawing of a cat and mouse, using Typography with the cat made out of the letters 'cat', and the mouse made out of the letters 'mouse'.  Unfortunately it was uncredited so I won't put a link to it here.

I loved the idea so much and went to bed aspiring to doing something like that myself.

When I woke up this morning I was still thinking about it, so in my half asleep state went to my pencil and paper, and using the outline of a dove that I drew for my February 12th 2012 post 'Be Free'  I immediately started penciling in the word 'PEACE'....and immediately it worked!

 Here is my initial scribble:

Dove Tree Mandala

'Dove Tree Mandala'
copyright 2012 by Shiloh Moore
Mixed Media on Canvas
14"x14" square

I've had this piccie in mind for a long time.  In early July I made a scribble that had the beginnings of the idea:

I wanted to use the tree as a circle in a square like a mandala.  I've been looking at art by mixed media artists so I wanted to experiment and use different media and textures.

In the foreground I made doves using the design I created for the doves in "Be Free" (Sunday Feb 12, 2012 on ByShi).  I made them from beautiful black and purple musical manuscript papers by 'Alison Ellis Design - A Formal Affair'.

In the background, to make the circle in the centre, I glued down some out-of-copyright manuscript within the circle.  Then I scrunched some tissue paper and glued that down, before doing the wash with watercolours in greens.  Here is the paper with tissue:

For the sky around the tree I glued down text from a book I bought cheaply from a thrift shop.  Then I covered this with scrunched tissue paper and then coloured it using watercolours.

I joined the two backgrounds together and outlined them in black:

Then I thickened the outline in pen and added design to the sun and the trunk of the tree.

I liked it as is, but as it's such a large canvas I thought it still needed a foreground.  So I went ahead and added the cut out doves and outlined them in pen.  I put tiny doves in the corners and added the wavy lines to the corners to give it a finished look and so the corners didn't look bare.

To me this symbolises peace, freedom, beauty, earthiness, nature and love.

Spiralbird

'Spiralbird' copyright 2012 by Shiloh Moore
11" x 14" Mixed Media on Canvas
Completed 26/8/12

I found some beautiful purple paper with silver scribbled sheet music on it, by Alison Ellis Design scrapbooking paper.  I wanted to use it in a mixed media painting.  I thought of using it with a bird so the music was bird song.  I drew a simplified image of a bird and I imagined it with spirals coming up from the bottom.

I played around with pearlised coloured acrylic paints for the background.  Then added some silver spots using bubblewrap.  Then I glued on the scrapbooking paper.  Then I drew on the outline of the bird and it looked like this:

Then I filled in the body with silver and it looked like this:

Then I drew on the spirals and Spiralbird was complete!

'Circle of Life'

'Circle of Life' A4 Watercolour on paper, (c) 2012 by Shiloh Moore

This image has been bubbling in my mind for months. It has been begging to be created. I drew it with Pitt Pen while lying down, then worked on it with watercolours sitting up for short spurts, then resting in between. I imagined a curvaceous tree at the heart of a circle of life, home to a wise owl, a bird, a lizard, a spider with its web. Surrounded on the ground by flowers, a deer, butterflies and a dragonfly in the air, all being enjoyed by a little girl with pigtails on a swing. Innocence, life, beauty, joy, nature. Happiness.

Free Spirit

"Free Spirit" mixed media (c) by Shiloh Moore - Face Detail

The other day I discovered a new style of art that really attracts me - mixed media portraits. I fell in love with art by Rachelle Panagarry, and on her site, 'Art Eye Candy,' she has some YouTube clips to show you how she does her gorgeous faces, found here.

I was inspired to give it a go. This first shot is a close up of my girl.

This next one is a detail of the top right hand corner.

This is a close up of the mid right section:
Here is the top left corner:
And the lower right corner has a hummingbird:

Be Free

I had some beautiful black, white and silver papers and a black and white square frame. One paper was of empty bird cages so I wanted to make a simple collage of a dove flying free.

Here's a close up of the papers without the frame:

15/2/12 I made a matching dove with the opposite papers:
Together they look like this:
