I loved the movie 'Dirty Dancing' as a kid, and I wanted to draw the iconic end dance scene in my line drawing style.  Fun!

'Eleven - Stranger Things'

'Eleven - Stranger Things'
2017 by Shiloh Moore
5x5" Pitt Pen and Watercolour on Paper

I watched the show 'Stranger Things' on Netflix and loved it.  Again, like I said in my last post, I am fairly new to science fiction/fantasy/adventure, though as a kid I saw 'ET' once, and 'Goonies' over and over, and LOVED Winona Ryder, so I knew enough to get the nostalgic feeling that's portrayed in the show.

What stood out to me was the cast's performances.  Especially the kids.  Especially Millie Bobby Brown who plays the character 'El' ('Eleven')  She was brilliant.  She makes me want to shave my head (again!...)

I drew El from the promotional posters, with the words 'Stranger Things' spelled out with lights (see 'Stranger Things' for why.)  I drew it with Pitt Pen then coloured it with watercolours.  I also drew it as a black, white and red line drawing using Pitt Pen and red ultra fine Bic Mark-It pen.

La La Land - Here's To The Ones Who Dream

'La La Land - Here's To The Ones Who Dream'
2017 by Shiloh Moore
5x5" Pitt Pen and Watercolour on Paper

I recently saw the film 'La La Land.'  It was special for me on many levels.

Firstly it was the first movie I was well enough to go to with a friend in about 8 years.  I used to go to movies regularly but became too ill to go.  Occasionally I pushed myself to go spontaneously to a morning session if I was well enough, but I always went on my own in case I needed to leave the cinema mid-movie, plus I didn't have energy to talk to somebody as well as sit up long enough for a movie.  So this was a landmark occasion for me to go to a movie with a friend.

Secondly I loved the film.  The music, costumes, acting, singing, dancing, storyline... I was swept away and loved it all.  It's such a joyful film - yet remains realistic.  It made me feel proud of who I am and what I do with my art - I'm a 'dreamer' and want to spread joy through art.  The world needs more joy through creativity.

Thirdly, the movie made me want to draw.  I was looking at the promotional posters and I immediately saw lines, shapes and the flow of the bodies form and I really wanted to draw it.  So I did, using my 'line-drawing' style I developed years ago and always fall back on.  It was so much fun!

So I'd like to thank 'La La Land' for bringing me joy.  This is my tribute, and I hope you enjoy it. 'Here's to the ones who dream.'

Obama Care

'Obama Care'

I am an Australian with multiple chronic health conditions.  My life has been saved by our world class health care system multiple times.

My main condition though, ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) is largely neglected worldwide.  I have friends with ME in the US.

In March 2012 a couple, Courtney and Bob Miller, at a town hall meeting in Reno, Nevada, asked Obama to increase the funding and research for ME in the US.  Obama promised he would investigate what the NIH (National Institute for Health) was doing about ME, and he kept that promise to elevate the priority of ME/CFS in the US.

We have just seen the next president's Inauguration and marches for women around the world.  I was not well enough to march, but instead I turned the TV off and drew Michelle and Barack Obama in gratitude for the impact they have made globally.  I drew most of this portrait while lying down.

I stand with healthcare (especially treatment of people with ME/CFS,) women's rights, race relations, multiculturalism, LGBTI rights and with the marginalised.

The world is watching, with bated breath.

Love Harp!

I made this piece as a gift for a special someone who plays the harp, and for her harp loving friends.  It is a line drawing of a person playing a harp simplified into a love heart shape, with the words 'Love Harp!' forming the strings.  I did another version especially for her with the harp strings forming her name. Love harp, love you!

This was a Christmas gift for a special couple who love skulls and skeletons.  It is of a hand making the 'rock n roll' hand sign, juxtaposed with a butterfly to add colour and life, and to symbolise the soul.  They both live and breathe music, and it is in their bones.  I'm sure they will rock on for eternity. Love you both!

Love And Light

My last image for 2016 was typography of the word 'Hope.'  I would like to start the year 2017 with another word:  'Love'.  I call this piece 'Love and Light.' I love it when people sign off mail with 'Love and Light' and I love the intention.  This year I hope love and light permeate our lives.

To create this image I went through a few steps:

Step one:  I drew the love heart using the word 'Love' in the shape of a heart

'Love Heart'
© 2016 by Shiloh Moore
Step Two: I drew a good copy using Red Bic Mark-It Pen on Paper
Step Three: I pasted a collage for the first Layer of
8x10" Mixed Media Background
using book pages and music, then decorated it with stamps

Step Four: I finished the  8x10" Mixed Media Background
with a layer of crumpled tissue paper then painted over it with pink watercolour

Step Five: I digitally combined the Love Heart drawing with the
mixed media background using 'PicMonkey' online

Step Six: I played with colours and effects on
the image using the 'Enlight' app on my phone
to get the final image (above)

May your life be filled with 'Love and Light' through 2017 and beyond!

Plait Hairstyle

Earlier in the year I drew a girl from behind, wearing one of my favourite hairstyles, which can be found here: 'Twirl Hairstyle' by Shiloh Moore August 2016

I wanted to try again to draw a girl, this time with a plait.  I added a red bow as I loved wearing ribbons in my hair when I was young and had long hair (and scrunchies - it was the 80's/early 90's!)  These are two of my favourite hairstyles for long hair.  In my dreams, when I am healthy, I have long hair (I had to have my  waist-length hair cut off aged 14 due to the pain it caused with Fibromyalgia. Even tying shorter hair back or wearing a headband hurts - to this day, so I have had very short hair since.)  I love long hair and I associate it with my childhood - a happy time when I was healthier.

Shi Selfie Portrait

'Shi Selfie Portrait - Collage'
© 8-23 Nov 2016 by Shiloh Moore
Pitt Pen and Watercolour on Paper

I wanted to do a new self portrait.  I photocopied a selfie and traced the outline with a Pitt Pen.  Then I wanted to do more detail, so I painted it with green watercolour.  I liked how the two went together and decided to do a Pop-Art style collage of the portrait in different colours.  But I thought I might do something different, so instead of painting four identical pictures, for the final image I took a selfie close up of my eye when laughing and painted that in purple.

When Books Come Alive

'When Books Come Alive' Pt 1
© 2016 by Shiloh Moore
4x6" Pitt Pen on Paper

I was drawing in my 'old faithful' line drawing style and drew a person reading, 'When Books Come Alive'.  (Above).  Then I looked at it more and saw I could do another version, and added a child, to make the book a story book, for part 2 (below).  I love reading, and I have beloved memories of my parents and adults reading with me as a child.  I too love reading with children today, and I wanted to express that joy.

Pregnancy Belly Table

My dear friend Rosie is heavily pregnant.  She posted a photo of herself resting a bowl on her belly, with the caption 'Pregnancy Level - your-belly-is-your-table' reached!'

I thought it was hilarious and asked if I could draw it.   I can't wait to meet your little person, Rosie!

Love Heart Owls

8"x10" Pitt Pen and Posca Marker on Paper

At the beginning of September I was browing Pinterest.  I saw an amazing photo of owls made into a love heart shape (below:)  I reverse image searched to try to find the amazing artist/illustrator, but unfotunately I could not find an original source to reference.

When I looked at the image from Pinterest, I could see my heart owl could be adapted to fit 2 owls into a heart shape using a similar design.

Firstly I did a watercolour of the image: (below.)  I was not entirely happy with this, but as I was looking at it, I could see that it may be more effective to use the Paisley pattern used in the 'Paisley Heart Thanks Owl', so today I drew the top image above, of the 'Paisley Love Heart Owls.'

My dear friend Cat visits often, and one time she was looking way too adorable with her hipster glasses and cute hair.  I just had to take a photo and draw her!  Here is my effort.  I'm not too happy with her lips and teeth, but I love how her hair has turned out.  Next time I might ask her to keep her mouth closed?!  But she radiates with her smile!  She pointed out she looks very French in my drawing of her.  I'm also not happy that I think I've made her look way older than she it.  But I'm new to portraits and it was fun to do.

I was recently browsing Pinterest and found a number of gorgeous line drawings by several artists, of women, of which I especially loved their hair.  So I looked up a favourite hairstyle I used to love when I had longer hair, and drew it using that style. Beauty!

Irritable Owl Syndrome

A friend asked me to draw an owl that looks grumpy to make a card for a friend with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).  They joke around and call it 'Irritable Owl Syndrome' and she wanted me to make a card from it.  I came up with this :)

Yin Yang Birdies

'Yin Yang Birdies'
© 2016 by Shiloh Moore
5"x5" Pitt Pen on Paper

In April I woke from a dream and scribbled this design in a pad of paper by my bed.  I recently discovered it and thought it was cool!  So I drew a good copy using pitt pens.  I love the connection between black and white, night and day, sleepy and awake/healthy and tired.  I like how the bottom, white, 'healthy' birdie seems to happily carry the snoozing black birdie.  They help each other out and go together well.  Yin and yang.  I really like this one.

On Facebook I saw this awesome photo of two cats, one black, one white, hugging and tails forming a love heart:
Note:  I don't have credit for this photo, I put it through
Google Image Search and it was on hundreds
of sites, none of which were credited.
Sorry to the owner of this photo. Great shot!

I was in love, and simplified it into my black and white version using black Pitt Pen.  I love promoting love and equality through cute kitties!

Hair!

'Hair!'
© 3+8/4/16 by Shiloh Moore
Pitt Pen on Paper

After drawing the outline to 'Woman of Lines' (click to see previous post), I experimented with changing her hair!

The middle image, of long hair was the original style, then I drew the left style in a bob, then the right curly style.  It's amazing how different a hairstyle changes the look!

Women of Lines

8"x10" Paper Collage and Pitt Pen

On Pinterest I came across a striking digital artwork called 'Peggy' by Craig and Karl (click to see the link.) Its lines were striking and it inspired me to make this collage of a woman using stripey lines.

The first sketch/collage outline, inspired me to branch out into my next upcoming project, 'Hair!' so watch this space:
