In June 2015 I drew a portrait of my delightful pooch, in this post 'Zentangle Part 3 - Tenterfield Terrier' from the original photograph below.

I was given some sharpie markers for Christmas, so in my mind I reduced the image to using 2 different shades of colour plus white.  Then I drew my dog using 2 shades of blue, 2 shades of pink, 2 shades of green and 2 shades of orange to create a Pop Art styled patterned portrait.  I imagine it would go well as a pattern for wrapping paper!

dash-hound

8"x10" Pitt Pen and Watercolour on Paper

I was looking at a present a friend gave me, a 'Puppy Pen' - a pen in the shape of a Dachshund.  I love it.  As I was looking at it, the word 'dash-hound' came to me and I thought this would be fun to draw!

So I drew the word 'dash-hound' with a dashing-dachshund drawn to illustrate the 'dash' in the middle.

What fun!

A charity I care about is Movember, which raises money for Men's Health (for Prostate cancer, Testicular cancer, and Mental Health and Suicide Prevention in particular.)

Obviously as a chronically ill woman, I support Women's Health charities.  I also care about men. Suicide is now the leading cause of death for men in Australia between the ages of 15 and 44.  Each day, on average 6 men in Australia take their lives.  This is alarming. A common attitude for men is to 'suck it up' and 'be a man.'  This charity encourages men to care about their health and seek help if needed.

For Movember, on the first of November men shave, and throughout the month they grow a moustache.  Instead of growing a mo, I am going to donate the original artwork ‘Movember Pug,’ and send it to one lucky person who donates to my Movember page, selected randomly.’

‘Movember Pug,’ was drawn from a sticker by Typo (shown below made into a card).  Then I added a mo!  I chose a pug, as they have such sad eyes.  I made this one smile a little but you can see his vulnerability in his eyes.

It takes strength to admit you're not ok, and it takes courage to do something about it.

A wonderful friend has visited once a month for many years, and always brings me a cappuccino.  His beverage of choice is a Strong Long Black.  Earlier this year he got a pet Staffy puppy called Scout and excitedly brought Scout to visit.  Scout promptly peed on my couch, but other than that he was adorable!  Scout's grown up a lot now, but I wanted to draw him from my photo of him in his youth.  In my pic he's wearing a beret because my friend wore a beret to his formal!

To those who are struggling or who live with long term depression, I'd like to say:
"It's ok to be sad and to cry.  You're still just as cute and lovable as a pug."

Zentangle Part 3: Tenterfield Terrier

"Zentangle Tenterfield Terrier"

30 May - 24 June 2015
Pitt Pens and Derwent Pencils on Watercolour paper, on Scrapbooking Paper Background

For my third effort at Zentangle I was ambitious, I wanted to do a portrait in memory of my beloved pooch!  I wanted to give it as a gift, so the pressure was on to do it justice. Here's the photo of my beloved:

I did the outline the same day as the outlines of my previous posts, 'Zentangle Daschund', and 'Zentangle Dove' (30th May 2015.)

I had both a brown and a black Pitt Pen to do the doodling on her face, so I photocopied my outline and roughly scribbled in the areas to be shaded black and brown.

Then I took a couple weeks off as my arms were in extreme Fibromyalgia pain from the drawing I had done (my arms are always sore but this spurt of artwork had really flared it again.)

When I could, I looked at other zentangle and zen doodles online and in a book, for ideas as to my favourite styles of doodling, and ones that may look good and were appropriate for my pooch!

Then I could contain my pacing/resting/art ban no longer and decided to start doodling.  I worked on it for a few days 20-24th June and before I knew it, it was finished!

Here's a progress pic when I had started doodling:

Zentangle Part 2: Dachshund

"Zentangle Dachshund"
© 2015 By Shiloh Moore
31/5/15

After I did my 'practice' Zentangle Doodle of 'Zentangle Dove' (Zentangle Part 1: Dove on ByShi Blog June 2 2015), I was game to give myself a challenge to do a portrait with my gorgeous friend's amazing dachshund as my muse. I tried to do a portrait of them both, but my attempt at a portrait of my friend was far from complimentary (yes, not all my work turns out!!!), so I cut her out and just made it star her dachshund.  And I'm happy with the result!

My gorgeous friend's dachshund

Stage one of the drawing

I am not the best at proportions so I cheated by photocopying the photo, then used a light box to trace the outline as above.

Then, while lying down in the position illustrated in my blogpost 'Living With ME and FM Series - Lying Down' (ByShi Blogpost Jan 18 2012), I doodled the zentangle details, then cut it out with patterned papers as a frame.

The framed Zentangle picture and a photo of my gorgeous friend's dachshund side by side:

I've been absolutely exhausted and have had elevated pain levels since, so I think I overdid it and must pace myself before I start my next project (though I have so many ideas!!!)  But I feel wonderful emotionally to have created once again.  Art is definitely an 'important prescription' for my soul! (Thanks to my doc for the prescription - see 'Zentangle Part 1: Dove')

SpiralDaschund

'SpiralDaschund'

completed 3/10/12
12x16" Mixed Media on Canvas

I love dogs and I have two special friends who super love Daschunds, so I did this with them in mind.  They are a particularly cute breed!

I did this in a similar style to 'Spiralbird' (August 2012) and 'SpiralKittyLove' (Sept 2012,) using acrylics and pen and Alison Ellis Design papers.  I think this will complete the series.
