I Dig You

Years ago, I saw a valentine's card that I thought was hilarious.  It said 'I Like You' and had a picture of a dog sniffing another dog's butt.  How romantic!

Last year I wanted to draw my own version, so I came up with the pun 'I dig you' (which is slang for 'I like you') and drew an illustration of a boy dachshund getting so excited sniffing a girl dachshund's butt, that he digs his feet.

Randomly, after I drafted my picture, on Facebook a friend posted a cartoon by the artist Gemma Correll.  I LOVE her work!  She draws hilarious cartoons, puns and a variety of things.   Pugs and cartoons on mental health are her specialty and I think she's just brilliant.  I wanted to support her work so I ordered some books by her - including 'The Worrier's Guide to Life,' 'It's a Punderful Life,' and 'The Little Book of Pug Wisdom.'  She also had 'Doodling For Dog People.' What an awesome discovery.

And...while I was browsing her artwork, I came across the original 'I Like You' card!  You can buy it here:  'I Like You' by Gemma Correll - by Ohh Deer gifts

I recently discovered art by James Luke Burke Creative which introduced me to the Jane Davenport art supply range.  Her watercolours are amazing, and I was drawn to her 'Bright Palette' - with 12 vibrant, bright colours.

This was my first artwork experimenting with them.  I love the colours.  I drew the girl from a photo of a red dress by Armani, and copied the model's pose but changed the colours.  I used a range of colours from purple, pinks, blues, greens and yellow.  The Jane Davenport colours I used are named 'Royal,' 'Fairytale', 'Best Friend', 'Butterfly', '70's Eyeshadow,' 'Mermaid,' 'Jimminy,' and 'Buzzy.'

I love how the colours dried with patterns in the watercolour wash.  I was very happy with the result and am excited to have new bright watercolours to play with - it's exactly what I have wanted for a very long time!

'Eleven - Stranger Things'

'Eleven - Stranger Things'

I watched the show 'Stranger Things' on Netflix and loved it.  Again, like I said in my last post, I am fairly new to science fiction/fantasy/adventure, though as a kid I saw 'ET' once, and 'Goonies' over and over, and LOVED Winona Ryder, so I knew enough to get the nostalgic feeling that's portrayed in the show.

What stood out to me was the cast's performances.  Especially the kids.  Especially Millie Bobby Brown who plays the character 'El' ('Eleven')  She was brilliant.  She makes me want to shave my head (again!...)

I drew El from the promotional posters, with the words 'Stranger Things' spelled out with lights (see 'Stranger Things' for why.)  I drew it with Pitt Pen then coloured it with watercolours.  I also drew it as a black, white and red line drawing using Pitt Pen and red ultra fine Bic Mark-It pen.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

'Everything Is Connected...'

I was recently introduced to a show on Netflix called 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.'  It is based on books by Douglas Adams.  Science Fiction/Adventure is a pretty new genre for me, but I loved it.  It was so creative, with many characters' lives weaved together in a complex yet clever plot.  It twists and turns and had me hooked.  The two lead actors, Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood were hilarious and acted brilliantly.  And I've always loved Elijah Wood - those eyes!

In the final episodes these characters were dressed in distinctive clothing that I loved so much I just wanted to draw them.  On IMDB I found this photo of Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood by Bettina Strauss/BBCA ©2016 AMC Film Holdings LLC.   I then drew them with Pitt Pen and coloured them with watercolours, adding salt to the background when wet to produce the effect.

La La Land - Here's To The Ones Who Dream

'La La Land - Here's To The Ones Who Dream'
2017 by Shiloh Moore
5x5" Pitt Pen and Watercolour on Paper

I recently saw the film 'La La Land.'  It was special for me on many levels.

Firstly it was the first movie I was well enough to go to with a friend in about 8 years.  I used to go to movies regularly but became too ill to go.  Occasionally I pushed myself to go spontaneously to a morning session if I was well enough, but I always went on my own in case I needed to leave the cinema mid-movie, plus I didn't have energy to talk to somebody as well as sit up long enough for a movie.  So this was a landmark occasion for me to go to a movie with a friend.

Secondly I loved the film.  The music, costumes, acting, singing, dancing, storyline... I was swept away and loved it all.  It's such a joyful film - yet remains realistic.  It made me feel proud of who I am and what I do with my art - I'm a 'dreamer' and want to spread joy through art.  The world needs more joy through creativity.

Thirdly, the movie made me want to draw.  I was looking at the promotional posters and I immediately saw lines, shapes and the flow of the bodies form and I really wanted to draw it.  So I did, using my 'line-drawing' style I developed years ago and always fall back on.  It was so much fun!

So I'd like to thank 'La La Land' for bringing me joy.  This is my tribute, and I hope you enjoy it. 'Here's to the ones who dream.'

Love And Light

My last image for 2016 was typography of the word 'Hope.'  I would like to start the year 2017 with another word:  'Love'.  I call this piece 'Love and Light.' I love it when people sign off mail with 'Love and Light' and I love the intention.  This year I hope love and light permeate our lives.

To create this image I went through a few steps:

Step one:  I drew the love heart using the word 'Love' in the shape of a heart

'Love Heart'
© 2016 by Shiloh Moore
Step Two: I drew a good copy using Red Bic Mark-It Pen on Paper
Step Three: I pasted a collage for the first Layer of
8x10" Mixed Media Background
using book pages and music, then decorated it with stamps

Step Four: I finished the  8x10" Mixed Media Background
with a layer of crumpled tissue paper then painted over it with pink watercolour

Step Five: I digitally combined the Love Heart drawing with the
mixed media background using 'PicMonkey' online

Step Six: I played with colours and effects on
the image using the 'Enlight' app on my phone
to get the final image (above)

May your life be filled with 'Love and Light' through 2017 and beyond!

This Christmas I made an investment.  I have been loving using watercolours, and my humble set I was given almost 20 years ago is almost used up.  So I splurged on a full set of 40 Windsor and Newton Cotman Watercolour Half Pans, and to hold them, a Schmincke tin.

I drew up a colour chart to show examples of the colours, as you can't clearly tell the colours from the pans as is.

Then I wanted to experiment and play with them.  What better way than to be inspired by their luscious beauty and do a still life featuring the watercolour set itself?

Here are the steps I took:
Step 1: Sketch of 'Watercolour Love'  Note I changed the Schminke owl symbol to my own owl symbol.

"You AreThe Sky, You Are The Ocean'

Your emotions are the clouds, ever-changing;
You are the sky, ever present.

 Your feelings are the waves, they swell and sweep;
You are the ocean, vast and deep.

The sky does not control its clouds.
The ocean does not cling to its waves,
and avoid its crashes.

Allow whatever thoughts may arise.
Know they will change
and you will remain.

My friends have 3 sons.  They gave me a gift of 3 owl figurines, in the shape of 'Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil.' When they bought it for me, their 6 year old son, Monty, excitedly exclaimed, 'I get it!  It's like the monkeys!  Hear no bad, See no bad, Smell no bad!'

I thought this was hilarious and it gave me a good giggle.  I thought I'd draw a picture of it, to give to the boys for their room.

So Happy 7th Birthday, Monty and Gabby (and it's for you too, Charlie!)  Aunty Shi loves you 3 monkeys!

Shi Selfie Portrait

Pitt Pen and Watercolour on Paper

I wanted to do a new self portrait.  I photocopied a selfie and traced the outline with a Pitt Pen.  Then I wanted to do more detail, so I painted it with green watercolour.  I liked how the two went together and decided to do a Pop-Art style collage of the portrait in different colours.  But I thought I might do something different, so instead of painting four identical pictures, for the final image I took a selfie close up of my eye when laughing and painted that in purple.

I was looking at a present a friend gave me, a 'Puppy Pen' - a pen in the shape of a Dachshund.  I love it.  As I was looking at it, the word 'dash-hound' came to me and I thought this would be fun to draw!

So I drew the word 'dash-hound' with a dashing-dachshund drawn to illustrate the 'dash' in the middle.

What fun!

A charity I care about is Movember, which raises money for Men's Health (for Prostate cancer, Testicular cancer, and Mental Health and Suicide Prevention in particular.)

Obviously as a chronically ill woman, I support Women's Health charities.  I also care about men. Suicide is now the leading cause of death for men in Australia between the ages of 15 and 44.  Each day, on average 6 men in Australia take their lives.  This is alarming. A common attitude for men is to 'suck it up' and 'be a man.'  This charity encourages men to care about their health and seek help if needed.

For Movember, on the first of November men shave, and throughout the month they grow a moustache.  Instead of growing a mo, I am going to donate the original artwork ‘Movember Pug,’ and send it to one lucky person who donates to my Movember page, selected randomly.’

‘Movember Pug,’ was drawn from a sticker by Typo (shown below made into a card).  Then I added a mo!  I chose a pug, as they have such sad eyes.  I made this one smile a little but you can see his vulnerability in his eyes.

It takes strength to admit you're not ok, and it takes courage to do something about it.

Love Heart Owls

8"x10" Pitt Pen and Posca Marker on Paper

At the beginning of September I was browing Pinterest.  I saw an amazing photo of owls made into a love heart shape (below:)  I reverse image searched to try to find the amazing artist/illustrator, but unfotunately I could not find an original source to reference.
Image from Pinterest and other sites on the internet, artist unknown

When I looked at the image from Pinterest, I could see my heart owl could be adapted to fit 2 owls into a heart shape using a similar design.

Firstly I did a watercolour of the image: (below.)  I was not entirely happy with this, but as I was looking at it, I could see that it may be more effective to use the Paisley pattern used in the 'Paisley Heart Thanks Owl', so today I drew the top image above, of the 'Paisley Love Heart Owls.'

Using the same outline of an owl that I used for 'What a Hoot',  and 'Dotty Owls'  I drew the owl with white oil pastel, then added the colour with watercolours, sprinkling it with rock salt while it was still wet.  Once dry, I removed the rock salt and this gave the coloured areas their pattern.  Then I added the black for the eyes and around the beak/nose (weird question: does an owl have a beak or a nose or a snout?!!!)  Then she was done!

As a kid I loved finding Dandelions and blowing on them to make a wish.

To give this piece a title, Mum suggested 'Make a Wish' and Dad suggested 'The Answer (is blowing in the wind)' and I loved both titles but couldn't choose.  So I went all boring and named it 'Dandelion'!

I scribbled the idea for this image late one night 19th July 2016.  Sometimes I really wish I could take away a friend's pain, grief or illness. I don't like 'Get Well Soon' cards for people with long term illness or mental illness or people who are grieving, but sometimes I wish I could just kiss things better.  So I made this for a card.

No F*x Left To Give

For when you're 'over it' and you've 'no f*cks left to give'...

I have a gorgeous friend who visits regularly on what we sometimes call 'Swear Sunday,' (to allow ourselves to be honest and swear when we need to.)  She recommended a book on priorities, 'The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck.'  It sounded wonderfully irreverent and gave us a good laugh.  I forgot what the title was exactly, and thought it was the phrase 'No f*cks left to give.'  Meanwhile I had been trying to draw a fox, so I combined them and came up with this illustration!
