Inspired by my post 'Pop Art Tenterfield Terrier,' I decided to draw more of my favourite dogs.  I chose a Bichon Frise, West Highland White Terrier (Westie), a Pug, and another Tenterfield Terrier based on dogs I know.  I drew them using Sharpie Markers on paper, using two tones of each colour for each dog.

These are my sketches of the dogs and a few other friends' pets that I will draw soon:

Watercolour Love

This Christmas I made an investment.  I have been loving using watercolours, and my humble set I was given almost 20 years ago is almost used up.  So I splurged on a full set of 40 Windsor and Newton Cotman Watercolour Half Pans, and to hold them, a Schmincke tin.

I drew up a colour chart to show examples of the colours, as you can't clearly tell the colours from the pans as is.

Then I wanted to experiment and play with them.  What better way than to be inspired by their luscious beauty and do a still life featuring the watercolour set itself?

Here are the steps I took:
Step 1: Sketch of 'Watercolour Love'  Note I changed the Schminke owl symbol to my own owl symbol.

I woke from a dream saying the words 'laugh, love, live'.  I love those words!  So I drew them in a way you can colour in.

thank you birdies

5"x5" Pitt Pen and Watercolour on Paper

This is the second 'Thank You' card I finished on the 27th April.  I love simplified birdies and used rainbow colours to bring them alive.  Note the green one is resting and doing its own thing, backwards to all the other brightly alert birdies.  No prizes for guessing which birdie I identify with!

I include the green resting birdie, who is cared for by all the other birds who let her join in, and note the rainbow wouldn't be complete without her.  It's a thank you card for all who look after me and let me join in, and for all those other green birdies out there, you are an important part of the rainbow!

Tropical Toucan

'Tropical Toucan'

8x10" White Oil Pastel and Watercolour on paper

I love the colours of a toucan!  This image brings me much joy.  You can buy prints and products from this and many other artworks on Redbubble here

Update:  a friend asked how I made 'Tropical Toucan'.  Here's a guide:

1) First I drew the outline in pencil, then traced it with white oil pastel, using a light box to make it easier.  The light box also gave enough light to be able to see where the white oil pastel was on the white paper.

2) Then using bright watercolours, (I use the watercolour blocks, you can use tubes too) I filled in the colour.  I used watercolour brush pens - I find them easier to control and use than ordinary brushes.

I find watercolour is a great medium as you don't have to press hard like pencils.  And you are forced to 'pace' - I would sit up long enough to do one colour at a time, then lie down between colours, as if you do two colours at a time that are next to each other, they tend to run.  So it takes some time and patience, but is less strenuous than sitting up and doing too much all at once.

Hypnotic Heart Owl

8"x10" Pastel and Watercolour on Paper

I was trying to sleep and a quick sketch of a heart faced Owl came to mind.

I wanted to experiment with watercolours and pastels.  I first drew the owl using white oil pastel seen below, then put a layer of bright watercolours over it.

Chapter 1: Giraffe Family

 "Chapter 1: Giraffe Family"
inspired by a photo by © Dave Jenike/Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden
By Shiloh Moore July 2015
Mixed media
Collage papers (including 'Chapter 1' page from a 'Babysitters Club book', and scrapbooking papers of music, leaves and hearts, and Paper dotted with ink using bubble wrap)
Layered with tissue paper,
then coloured with Watercolour
Image of drawing combined with background image using 'Picmonkey' online editing

Lots and lots of my friends are having children, so I've been drawn to pictures of families and pregnancy and children.  I was looking through Pinterest and found an amazing image of a family of giraffes.  There were no credits for the picture, but I google image searched and found this:

Giraffe Family

Firstly I drew an outline of my picture:
Outline by Shiloh Moore 13/7/15

I was thinking of drawing the spots on the giraffes using zentangle patterns, but decided I'd like to try using mixed media, and to use the effect of bubble wrap dots to give a spotty effect.  I was not sure it would work, but was willing to give it a try!

I set up the backgroud papers:

I chose to use a page from 'Chapter 1' of a double-up of a beloved 'Babysitters Club' book  I had, to give the title 'Chapter 1' as the start of life as a new family with the baby Giraffe.  Those books bring me good memories of my childhood.

I had to lighten the image for the outline to stand out.  So I covered it with with crumpled tissue paper to give it a textured effect.

Here was a basic preview of what it would look like.  I was worried you couldn't see the spots.... But then I added colour.
Here was the background effect in colour.

Then by computer I added the drawing of the giraffes to complete the effect.  I don't know how to manually transfer the image onto the background, so in real life all I have is the background image, plus the plain outline drawing.  If anyone knows of a way to transfer them together manually, not just on the computer, that would be ace!

So here is the final product.  I'm not entirely sure the bubble wrap texture came through well enough, so I'm not entirely happy with it.  But it was a fun effort.  I may go back to the original drawing and draw in some spots with Zentangle techniques afterall.  But for now, I'm utterly exhausted and in a tonne of pain so I must ban myself from doing more for a while!!!! Happily so though :)

Dragonfly

 'Dragonfly'
A5 Watercolour, Pitt Pen and Max Factor Max Effect Nailpolish on Paper
Copyright 2013 by Shiloh Moore

Last time I was near a creek I saw two gorgeous buzzing dragonflies.  I was captured by them.  Their iridescent glow was stimulating to the eye.  I tried to take a photo but couldn't get close enough and it just couldn't capture their essence.

Then a friend, Jayne Eldred, posted one of her photos of a dragonfly on her facebook page 'Jayne Eldred Photography' in the album 'Pokolbin, Hunter Valley March 2013.'

This photo stunned me.  The beauty of the delicate dragonfly, was captured incredibly.  I think it's my all-time favourite photo of a dragonfly!

I have a Max Factor Max Effect nail polish in blue that shines green on different angles.  I had an idea to draw the dragonfly and colour the body with this nailpolish to get the iridescent effect in different lighting.  It's not captured here in the scan, but framed in real life, you can see it shines at different angles.

I drew the dragonfly with pitt pen, coloured the body with nailpolish, then did the background colours with watercolour and detail on the wings of the body with more watercolour.

Rainbow Beauty

'Rainbow Beauty'
20"x 20" (51cm x 51cm) mixed media on canvas
copyright 2013 by Shiloh Moore

I haven't done any art for 6 weeks, it just wasn't flowing, and I decided not to push it.  I had the Easter 4 day weekend free and on the Thursday night this image came to me again - it's one I thought up over a year ago but hadn't yet had the energy to sit up and do.  So I woke up super motivated, and gave it a go, determined to at least make a start on it.

I first had the idea after seeing much of Rachelle Panagarry's gorgeous work on her blog www.arteyecandy.com I looked at her style of collage background with a face in the foreground, and loved it.  And her youtube clip for 'Faces in colour' on the page 'Art Eye Candy TV' at this website, gave me the idea for using the tissue paper, and also the collage in the background.

The good thing about this piece was it was done in steps.  So I was forced to take breaks.  I would do a layer, then lie down as it dried.  Then I'd do another layer, then lie down.  It's the most ambitious piece I've done so far and took a lot out of me (I expect to be in recovery mode for a while) but I love it and it makes me feel so good to have made it.  I love looking at it and seeing all the layers.

Here is a step by step guide to how it was done:

1)  First layer was a collage of faces from magazines:

2)  Next I outlined the face and hair in pitt pen, and painted a thin layer of skin coloured acrylic on the face and white on the eye.  I made sure the paint layer was thin enough so you could still see the collage layer underneath:

3) Then I added a layer of tissue paper:

4)  Over the tissue I painted with watercolour and outlined the detail with pitt pen.  These photos show detail:

Dove Tree Mandala

'Dove Tree Mandala'
copyright 2012 by Shiloh Moore
Mixed Media on Canvas
14"x14" square

I've had this piccie in mind for a long time.  In early July I made a scribble that had the beginnings of the idea:

I wanted to use the tree as a circle in a square like a mandala.  I've been looking at art by mixed media artists so I wanted to experiment and use different media and textures.

In the foreground I made doves using the design I created for the doves in "Be Free" (Sunday Feb 12, 2012 on ByShi).  I made them from beautiful black and purple musical manuscript papers by 'Alison Ellis Design - A Formal Affair'.

In the background, to make the circle in the centre, I glued down some out-of-copyright manuscript within the circle.  Then I scrunched some tissue paper and glued that down, before doing the wash with watercolours in greens.  Here is the paper with tissue:

For the sky around the tree I glued down text from a book I bought cheaply from a thrift shop.  Then I covered this with scrunched tissue paper and then coloured it using watercolours.

I joined the two backgrounds together and outlined them in black:

Then I thickened the outline in pen and added design to the sun and the trunk of the tree.

I liked it as is, but as it's such a large canvas I thought it still needed a foreground.  So I went ahead and added the cut out doves and outlined them in pen.  I put tiny doves in the corners and added the wavy lines to the corners to give it a finished look and so the corners didn't look bare.

To me this symbolises peace, freedom, beauty, earthiness, nature and love.

'Rainbow Girl'

'Rainbow Girl' A4 Mixed media (c) 2012 by Shiloh Moore

This girl came to me a few weeks ago and has been begging to be created.  I did her bit by bit, a layer of pencil, and stuck two pieces of music manuscript in the background of the two left corners.  Then a layer of acrylic skin tone paint on her face.  Then I glued a layer of tissue paper over the whole piece.  Once that was dry I painted the colour with watercolours.  Then I outlined the picture with black pitt pens.
She brings me joy :)
And the initial scribble:

The Tree of Life

I wanted to make an image of life with intense colour, and intense shadow and beauty. I used flourescent colours in the background (which look much brighter in real life,) and in the foreground did the deep shadow of a stylised curvaceous tree using spirals and leaves in circles. Beauty can come out of darkness, even when it seems impossible when you're in it.
